So what's up with this Keith Wolfe guy anyway.... Keith Wolfe has been around for a long time, and has a pretty strong presence on the Internet, so I often get asked by people what I know about him. Given that fact, and that I had heard a few grumbles around on some newsgroups, I decided I wanted to check the man out for myself. I made note of this fact alongside the link to his site, and before I had a chance to contact him, Keith contacted me, concerned that there was any question as to his character, and requesting a meeting so we could get things straight. I thought this was great--so I went. Now, I am always wary of people who make money from actors, because it is so easy to take advantage of people who have big dreams that are also very difficult to make come true. People get desperate, and some are willing to do or try just about anything. And Hollywood is notorious for being a buffet for these kinds of bottom-feeders. Yes, Keith Wolfe charges actors money. But based on the conversation I had with him in his office (which went on for a good hour or so), he is not making promises that he cannot keep. What he basically does is help actors get introduced to agents that he think best suits their individual abilities and talent. Does he know everybody?--of course not, no one does. But he has been around a long time, so he does know quite a few people. Does he send people to the same agents over and over again--I do not know, but even if he did, it would all come down to the reputation of that agent, because no decent agent wastes his or her time that way. I believe that an actor could maximize help from someone like Keith Wolfe by doing his or her homework ahead of time. There are books that give you information about agencies and agents--you should never go into a meeting with anyone without knowing something about them. Bottom line--I don't think Keith can help everyone. But I don't think he can help no one either. So basically what I encourage is that you see what others have to say, in addition to seeing what he has to say, either from his site or in person, then decide for yourself. No one can guarantee you that an agent will sign you once you meet with them. No one can guarantee that even if an agent signs you, you will get sent out. And of course, no one can guarantee you work. Keith made a big deal out of the fact that he really expects that if people are not happy with their experience with him, that they come to him to talk it over so some kind of fair understanding could be reached. In his mind, the buck stops at his desk. I'm not sure what more you can expect...he is open to answering peoples' concerns, of that I am certain. And concerns do exists--some of them I have reprinted here for you to consider. I also got some letters from people who Keith has helped--I am reprinting them here and encourage you to ask them questions (as well as Keith) if you are thinking about pursuing this further. I also encourage anyone one else who has comments to mail them to me, and I will see that they get published. |
