Hollywood History

American Variety Stage The American Variety Stage is a multimedia anthology selected from various Library of Congress holdings. This collection illustrates the vibrant and diverse forms of popular entertainment, especially vaudeville, that thrived from 1870-1920. Included are English- and Yiddish-language playscripts, theater playbills and programs, motion pictures, and photographs and memorabilia documenting the life and career of Harry Houdini. Theater posters and sound recordings will be added to this anthology in the future.

Early Motion Pictures from the Library of Congress, 1897-1916 These motion pictures represent the first chapter in the history of the medium. Most are actuality films with a running time of two or three minutes, although a handful exceed ten minutes. The motion pictures may be downloaded and displayed locally on players which support the AVI format using the Indeo codec. This codec is available from Intel for Microsoft Video for Windows, QuickTime for the Macintosh, and QuickTime for Windows.
