Fiction/Poetry

Jane Austen
Women didn't do what she did when she did it--that makes her extra-cool...

Ernest Hemingway
A very interesting life story which had no small part in his path as an author.

Langston Hughes
A major figure of the Harlem Renaissance and for good reason, as this
multi-talented man wrote novels, stories, songs, speeches, and children's books.

Zora Neale Hurston
Good books. Even more fascinating woman.

Vladamir Nabokov
Sexuality is not something to be afraid of, and no doubt this man has explored
humanity's secual natures in way no other author ever has...

Mark Twain
The most popular alter-ego out there--plus the author of one of my all-time favorite novel moments--in Huck Finn when
Huck is told by his Aunt that he better behave or else he won't get to be in Heaven with her and her friends and will
instead rot in hell with his buddy Tom Sawyer--and Huck basically is like"Hmm--be in Heaven with you or Hell with Tom--
hell's lookin' pretty good! A risk taker, often humerous--great short story writer too--check out the Man Who Corrupted
Hadleyburg--there was even a movie made of it that has Fred Gwynne aka Herman Munster doing a great job in a key role...

DO NOT MISS THIS SITE !!

I was looking for links to all of the following artists--and here is one man who has beautifully
created sites about each one. Here's one final note about all of them before you go:

James Joyce
Some people hate him, but I read Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man as a junior
in high school and it became one of my favorite books...

Jorge Luis Borges
Ficciones is on my bookshelf in the To Read pile. Skimmed in in college for a class, but never really read it...

Gabriel García Márquez
To me, his books read like flowing water and the imagery alone will carry you with no effort.
I did, however, try to read One Hundred Years of Solitude, in Spanish, one summer while
working as a receptionist at a high-powered law firm. Too many phone calls. Big mistake.

Umberto Eco
Pretty intriguing stuff, but unquestionable that a long attention span is required for one of his books...

Thomas Pynchon
Bet they wouldn't publish him today--but are we glad he got his rep established
early on...his novels are real adventures for the mind..

Franz Kafka
C'mon. He partied it up in Prague during the 20's and made everyone look
at butterflies in a whole different way...of course he's on this list...
