JRR Tolkien

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I had an audition at the end of March 1999 for the casting director of the Lord of the Rings film (as readers of the book know, there simply are no roles in this that I am right for *sigh*) and was  shocked when she told us that the British casting team had told her that they didn't think this series was all  that popular in America.  Sheesh. Every kid I knew with an interest in science fiction read it!  It's a quotable  worldwide classic as far as I'm concerned, a favorite of the kid next door and even certain rock stars.

Based on everything I've heard, the movie should be great!  The director is being very detail-oriented about  the specificities of each race, and is holding out for people who are right for the material rather than jumping  after celebrities to fill the parts--so to me, that's a highly encouraging sign that the project will not be a  disappointment to fans of the book who simply would never accept Bruce Willis as Frodo!   The casting people described the director as having almost a reverence about the process so even though I know some people  will have problems with a film no matter what, I ask other to give someone a chance to create a piece of art,  and then see if you like it or not.  We must allow artists the freedom  to challenge themselves  and for a  filmmaker with integrity, turning the Lord of the Rings into a film, certainly would be a high point of career  challenges. But even if you like to see movies,  the books cannot be replaced-they are an experience that should not be missed and if you read them, I promise--you'll never think of the earth beneath your feet in  the same way again!

As should be no great surprise, the Internet is full of information about this series, even from some with a sense of humor about it all--just follow the Tolkien Trail to parodies and fan fiction sure to delight. In fact, there's even a Fraud of the Rings. Before diving straight the stairway into Middle Earth, you can check out some quotations from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, get some history and pictures of some of his evil characters learn about the music of Middle Earth, find out  more about elves than you ever thought you could know!  If you are confused about who is who and where they  came from and all that, stop by the Tolkien FAQ, which clearly lays out each of the races so you can find out more about them.  For complete info about this author-phenomenon, visit the Tolkien Information Page and the Grey  Havens Ultimate Tolkien Resource for everything Tolkienian you can possibly find on the Web.
