In ancient times, people believed that bringing the first crops and seedlings of the year to the temple would insure a good growing season. In fact, it is possible that the word Easter is derived from the name of Astarte (also known as Oestar, Eostre , or Ishtar) a Semitic goddess of Spring, fertility and renewal. as Christianity permeated that part of the world, pagan festivals celebrating this goddess evolved into the Catholic custom of taking the food for Easter dinner to mass to be blessed, and it is from this tradition that the giving of the Easter Basket emerged. It is interesting also to note that the Jewish tradition of Purim , which also takes place at this time of year, is also celebrated with the giving of food baskets, and has Queen Esther as the heroine of the Purim story. This tradition of food baskets came a bit closer to what we know it as today when German families in the 1700s reached North American shores. Instead of baskets, children would leave their caps or bonnets, filled with straw, outside overnight, and then find colored, hard-cooked eggs tucked inside them in the morning. By the 1800s, candy was commonly included in the baskets, as well. Today, Easter baskets can be filled with any item you think would bring joy to the recipient, although bunnies, eggs and sweets remain the key ingredients in most Easter baskets as crafted today. The egg is perhaps the oldest and most universal symbol of rebirth and new life, and Egyptians and Persians used to dye eggs in spring colors and give them to friends long before Christ ever entered the picture. And as for the tradition of the Easter bunny? Well, it's hard to think of anythig more fertile than a rabbit! Here are some suggestions for how to make your own Easter baskets, and inexpensive baskets and treat bags you can purchase to assemble your own Easter Baskets, as well as some ideas for things you can fill them with. Hope you have a hoppy easter!
