Only
certain pet foods are allowed during Passover, as many contain chametz
(hametz), which makes finding kosher for passover pet food a bit challenging.
In fact, most flake or pellet bird & fish
foods contain wheat & grain products, including popular
name brand aquarium foods such as Wardley's and Tetra-min.
Now, obviously, dogs don't need
to "keep
kosher",
but you are not supposed to give
your dog chametz on Pesach because you are not allowed to own chametz,
or to derive benefit from it. It is permitted to feed pets kitniyot
-- rice, corn, soy beans, etc. -- which Ashkenazi Jews do not eat
on Passover, and there is a leniency
to assume that if you buy regular pet food , you can rely on the
fact that humans won't eat these foods. But the ingredients should
not contain any wheat, oats or other grains nor any "by-products" of
these, (nor meat and milk together, a separate, non-Passover issue).
And you are supposed to purchase the pet food before Passover begins. You
can also order kosher for Passover dog & cat food online (see
below) or make your own kosher pet food with ingredients you know
are kosher using these pet
food recipes.
