A Kenya Christmas

Father Christmas riding an elephant in the African bush? The British Empire did leave behind some cultural remnants, including the magic of Santa bringing gifts. The children even make "snow" in midsummer by shredding chicken feathers. Kids in hot climates will recognize the desire for snow at Christmas, and, in Africa and the West, many will enjoy the play with popular tradition.

Frankincense and Myrrh
in Inlaid Mosaic Box (Syria)

Once priced by their weight in gold, frankincense and myrrh were treasured by pharaohs, biblical kings, the Queen of Sheba and the Magi who presented them as a mystical gift to the infant Jesus. Transported from the East by travelers on camelback, frankincense and myrrh figured prominently in the traditions of many cultures and served as principal items of commerce in the ancient world. Today frankincense and myrrh are harvested from trees indigenous to the coastal plains of southern Arabia. The barks are pierced and the sap forms glistening tears that harden when exposed to air.

The incense arrives packed in a beautiful Syrian inlaid wooden chest which can be used as a pencil or ring box after the incense is gone. Covered in a red velvet bag with gold ribbon, this makes an unusual year-round gift for someone special. To experience the timeless enjoyment of the incense, burn the nuggets on a hot surface such as charcoal.
