Grantwriting Tips/Advice

So, you want to apply to a film grant program or humanities grant foundation to get funding for your independent film project? Here are some tips for writing a successful grant proposal, followed by listings for special interest funding grants for film projects, humanities grants & foundation resources for the arts that specifically apply to film and video, and grant programs that offer production & finishing funds for independent films, or donation of equipment or production services to filmmakers before shooting a film , etc. Please see the Film Financing section for additional ideas on how you can finance your independent feature film.

The Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund advances the Canadian broadcasting system by encouraging and funding the creation of excellent Canadian digital media.

British Council: Arts

British Columbia Film & TV Project Development Fund
Provides “market triggered” development financing for individual projects. Applications are evaluated on a first come/first served basis, and funding is available until the budget for the program is expended. A non-recoupable advance, matching up to 50% of the broadcast or distribution commitment is available. Applicants must be British Columbia owned and controlled production companies. International treaty or interprovincial co-productions are eligible.

Bravo!FACT (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) has distributed millions of dollars in grants for the production of hundreds of shorts across Canada.

British Columbia Film & TV Slate Development Fund
Targeted towards established producers who have demonstrated the capacity to sustain production in British Columbia. The program will provide a financing envelope up to $150,000 for the development and marketing of a slate of independent film and television productions. Slate financing will be producer-directed and performance-based. Applicants must be British Columbia owned and controlled production companies. International treaty or interprovincial co-productions are eligible to be included in the slate.

A major source of funding for innovative, educational and informational public television programming.


Pacific Pioneer Fund
To support emerging documentary filmmakers. The term "emerging" is intended to denote a person committed to the craft of making documentaries, who has demonstrated that commitment by several years of practical film or video experience. Grants to support filmmakers are limited to filmmakers or videographers who live and work in California, Oregon and Washington.

Creative Capitol
Since 1999, Creative Capital Foundation, a New York City-based nonprofit organization, has offered project-based grants to individual artists working in the visual arts, performing arts, film/video, and in emerging fields.

The Experimental Television Center Finishing & Presentation Funds
Provides support to electronic media and film artists and organizations in New York State to encourage creative work. Finishing Funds grants of up to $1500 to help with the completion of electronic media and film art works which are currently in progress.  Presentation Funds provides grants to not-for-profit organizations throughout New York State. Support is available for personal presentations by independent electronic media and film artists too.

Film Arts Foundation Grants Program
The goal of the Film Arts Foundation Grants Program is to encourage new and diverse works by film and video artists who have little likelihood of being supported through traditional funding sources. These awards are targeted for film and videomakers in categories that are among the most difficult areas in which to raise money for media projects.


Film Funding Resources: Europe & UK

Frameline Completion Fund
Submissions are accepted for documentary, educational, narrative, animation, or experimental projects by or about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their communities. The Fund also seeks to bring new work to under served audiences; with this in mind, we especially encourage applications by women and people of color.

The Fund for Jewish Documentary Filmmaking
Developed in 1996 with a lead grant of $650,000 from the Righteous Persons Foundation, established by Steven Spielberg, and recently received an additional $1 million from the Righteous Persons Foundation and another $1 million from the Revson Foundation. The Fund is designed to support the creation of original documentary films and videos that promote thoughtful consideration of Jewish history, culture, identity, and contemporary issues among diverse public audiences.

Independent Production Fund
The Independent Production Fund is a private independent Foundation established to assist independent production companies to finance the production of Canadian television drama series for private sector broadcasters.

Kodak Student Film Production Grants
The Student Filmmaker Program is Kodak's initiative to help support future filmmakers and encourage excellence in the field of motion picture education.

Media Darlings Guerilla Filmmaking Grant
Established to foster creative, resourceful filmmaking among artists who choose to work outside of the mainstream, 2x a year $1,000 is awarded to make an entire feature film, a DVD release of the movie provided upon completion, and DIY marketing advice.

Montana Edit Grants
Montana Edit offers its editing services free of charge to worthy projects. Grants are made to documentary projects, up to ten per year. Each project chosen receives in-kind services worth up to $50,000 per project

National Film Board of Canada Filmmaker Assistance Program

ITVS Funding (Public Television)
Each year ITVS funds, distributes and promotes new programs produced by independent producers...ITVS is looking for proposals which increase diversity on public television and present a range of subjects, viewpoints and forms that complement and challenge existing public television offerings.

The Jan Vrijman Fund
Provides financial means for documentary projects which are aimed at research and script development, production and post-production, distribution and sales.

The Jerome Foundation

Supports the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging artists in Minnesota or the five boroughs of New York City.

Marin Arts Council
Individual Artist Grants are unrestricted awards given annually. Grants are awarded to artists residing in Marin County (SF Bay Area) working in a variety of media based solely on the quality of artwork submitted

The Maryland Humanities Council's Grant Program
Supports public humanities programs that engage Maryland 's residents in exploring the rich and varied aspects of the human experience.

MoxieDocs Co-production Award
Open for submissions – rolling submission basis (no deadlines). Over $150,000 in products and services including: Panasonic HD 24P Camera package access, production budgeting/scheduling software, post-production services, theatre screening access (Academy Awards qualifying 7 consecutive days run), expendables and more.

NAATA Media Fund
interested in projects that examine the social issues intertwined with societal/historical changes in America from Asian Pacific American points of view

NYFA Artists's Fellowships
Artists' Fellowships are $7,000 cash awards made to individual originating artists living and working in the state of New York for use in career development. Grants are awarded in 16 artistic disciplines, with applications accepted in eight categories each year.

National Black Programming Consortium: Annual Open Call
Seeking contemporary films about the African American and African Diaspora experience for the National PBS Schedule. open to all producers and directors who are creating work about the African American and African Diaspora Experience. NBPC funding awards range from $1,000 to $80,000 to begin or complete a project.

National Endowment for the Humanities
An independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.

Oppenheimer Camera New Filmmaker Equipment Grant
A grant to support new filmmakers in producing their first serious film project by awarding the use of the Grant Program Arriflex 16SR camera package to senior and graduate thesis students and to independent filmmakers for a scheduled period of time.

Panavision Camera New Filmmaker Equipment Grant Program
Through this onoging program, Panavision donates the use of 16mm or 35mm motion picture camera equipment to filmmakers who are making Public Service Announcements, Showcase Reels, “Low-Budget” Independent Features or any other type of Short, Non-Profit films.


The Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media
Supports media activism and grassroots organizing by funding the pre-production and distribution of social issue film and video projects, and the production and distribution of radio projects. In order to qualify, proposed film and video projects must promote social change in their treatment of themes such as political and economic injustice, racial and gender justice, sexual politics, AIDS, censorship, cultural wars, militarism and environmental justice. Grants vary with a maximum award of $15,000 (most grants are from $3000 to $8000).

The Roy W. Dean Film and Writing Grants
From the Heart Productions is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to funding films that are “unique and make a contribution to society”

Sacramento International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival Completion Fund
The grants will be awarded to filmmakers in No. CA who are currently producing films that have a gay, bisexual or transexual/ transgendered theme and will be made in the range of $500 - $1,000. Preferably the grants will be awarded to films in post-production as well as video-to-film transfer.

Solaris Entertainment Completion Partners Fund
Solaris created a "Finishing Fund" to support fellow indie filmmakers who seek the financial and technical resources necessary to complete their films. Greg and Gavin O'Connor originally created the Completion Partners as a response to their own efforts in trying to raise the capital to complete post-production for their film Tumbleweeds. In addition to financing the completion of these films, the Completion Partners Fund will offer the expertise necessary to help navigate the post-production waters, enabling filmmakers to get the film they envision to the market in the most effective way. They will be instrumental in the films' promotion, festival strategy, and sales strategy. Solaris will provide the capital to complete post-production on three to five independent features each year.

Southern Humanities Media Fund
Devoted to exploring topics of widespread Southern significance and of regional or national interest, with an emphasis on analytical and interpretive documentaries. Only considers projects developed or sponsored by non-profit organizations or governmental agencies.

Sundance Documentary Fund
Supports U.S. and international documentary films and videos focused on current and significant issues and movements in contemporary human rights, freedom of expression, social justice, and civil liberties. Development funds are available for projects in the research or preproduction phase. Grants in this category range up to $15,000.Work in progress projects must be in production or postproduction. These submissions are eligible for the maximum grant award of $75,000, but generally, awards in this category will range from $20,000 to $50,000.

Telefilm Canada: Low Budget Independent Feature Film Assistance Program

Launched in 2000 as a complementary creator program of the Canada Feature Film Fund, LIFAP operates with an annual budget of approximately $1.7 million, and is designed to support director-driven projects, from both emerging and established filmmakers, up to an amount of $900,000 per project.
