Did
You Know?
Angel's
Trumpet Datura Metel comes from the family Solanaceae, the potato or
nightshade family, one of a group of plants known as "belladonnas,"
thought to be named from their use by Italian women to dilate their
pupils, which was considered beautiful.
Although exposure is sometimes unintentional by gardeners or farmers,
its toxic effects are seen most commonly in teens, who intentionally
misuse it for its hallucinogenic and euphoric effects, while presenting
with serious illness or death from its anticholinergic properties.
The plant has been described throughout history as a toxin famous for
its mind-altering properties, referenced in Homer's Odyssey, and Shakespeare's
plays: Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, and Anthony & Cleopatra. It was
also known to be used for the medicinal treatment of colds and asthma,
and for religious purposes...

These
evergreen, exotic large shrub/trees native to South America
will attain a height of 3-4 feet the first season and may reach
6-8 feet tall with a 6 foot spread in subsequent years. (D.
metel is a little smaller--about a 3-5' bush, and has flowers
that point up instead of down) Large medium-green leaves are
6"-12" long (larger in shadier areas) and tend to
be clustered near the top of the long stalks, right next to
the huge, downward pointing trumpet-shaped flowers. Flowers
are extremely fragrant, especially in the evening, and each
plant can have dozens, even hundreds of giant sized blooms that
will continue all the way through frost.
Brugmansia
(or Datura) Grow these Angels Trumpets in large containers,
preferably in full sun, and winter them indoors near a
sunny window. In Hardiness zone 10, you can plant Angels
Trumpet directly in the garden, or in patio pots, and leave
them in place year round. Tolerates drought but likes
moderate watering better! Excellent patio plant! And here
in So. CA, blooms in spring and fall!! I have one in yellow
and one in white, one in the ground and one on the back
porch in a pot, and both are thriving and flowered the
first season I had them! Now, as you can see in the photo
above, my "little plant" isn't little any more...
