Cacti & Succulents

Update 2004

I have added much to my collection since this started, and much to my chagrin, killed quite a few. Leave it to me to kill a cactus, including that big green one in the left of the picture, and actually, now that I look at it, mostly everything in this photo except for the stuff in the lemon container which I moved to the front where it's doing great. But among the more interesting additions to my patio is an Eidelweiss, which has been there for almost 2 years now and is doing just fine. I've promised to stay away from it, so hopefully that'll up it's chances. It seems to be happy just hanging out doing its thing, so I'll happily go with that flow. After all, this is Southern California.

2001

This is just the start of what I hope to be quite a lovely cactus & succulent garden. The Euphorbia, the tall plant in the lemon decorated holder is one of my favorites, constantly sprouting these red flower clusters one after the next. My friend who runs the UC Riverside Botanical Gardens has a spectacular cactus/succulent at his home, so I hope to bug him often and pick his brain for all kinds of info. I also hope to be able to track down some rare varieties I saw last time I was at the Huntingdon Library Gardens in San Marino. some of them were just spectacular. Although their bi-annual sales are now limited to members only, I got the scoop from one of the retirees who was acting as a docent on my visit. Seems that after attending certain lectures (free), you get a visit to the on-site plant store included for free also. So see, don't be so quick to blow off those old people just 'cause they're old and you assume they must be unhip and out of the loop. Not only are senior citizens full of all kinds of interesting facts, but they also kick some serious butt in the bargain-shopping department too!!
