Mojito
El Mojito
cocktail, a popular rum-and-mint Cuban drink
is to Cuba what the mint
julep is to the American
South. Using fresh mint and totally delicious, the mojito
Cubano, once merely a mint drink made of sugar cane-sweetened
water spiked with unrefined rum consumed by slaves in
Cuba in the late 19th century, eventually became the
rage of Havana, claiming even celebrated American author
Ernest Hemingway as a devotee,
perhaps because the Mojito drink is one of the few cocktails
that will actually improve your breath. This
Mojito drink recipe is easy to make. As with any Mojito recipe,
fresh mint is a key Mojito ingredient, so you might want
to experiment with varying flavors of mint with citrus
overtones to achieve a slightly different effect in your
drink. We've also included recipes for fruit-infused
variations on the authentic Mojito recipe such as the
Watermelon Mojito, Mango Mojito, Cinnamon-Asian Pear
Mojito, and Raspberry Mojito. If you like the Mojito,
you might also want to try our recipe for Hot
Mojito Tea or Mojito-Mint
Grilled Chicken.
Classic
Mojito
Reserve
6 mint leaves for garnish. Place remaining mint leaves in
medium bowl. Add sugar. Mash with wooden spoon until mint
is aromatic and oils are released.
Add rum and lime juice
and stir until sugar dissolves. Strain mixture into pitcher.
(Can be prepared 2 hours ahead; refrigerate.)
Add club soda to pitcher; gently stir. Fill each of 6 glasses
with 1 cup crushed ice.
Pour mojito over and garnish each glass
with 1 mint leaf and 1 lime wedge.
Raspberry
Mojito
In a tall
thin glass, muddle the Bacardi Razz, mint, sugar
and raspberries with a mortar and pestle or Mojito muddler,
and top with ice. Add a splash of club soda. Stir well and
garnish with a mint spring.
Watermelon Mojito
Puree a slice of watermelon and a slice of honeydew in a blender.
Combine 2 1/2 ounces of your melon puree with an ounce of
simple syrup, 5-6 mint leaves, and a splash of fresh lime
juice in a shaker.
Add 2 ounces of light rum, ice and shake thoroughly. Pour
into a rocks glass and garnish with a floating melon ball.
Virgin Watermelon Mojito
Follow the same steps to a watermelon mojito, excluding rum
from the recipe.
Cinnamon-Asian
Pear Mojito
Muddle Mint,
Lime & Sugar then add Pear Puree & Rum. Shake over
Crushed Ice & pour.
Strawberry
Mojito
Note:
Ths will taste very different than a regular Mojito because
the sweetness of the strawberries will mask the flavor of
the lime.
Quarter
the lime & strawberries and muddle in a rocks
glass with the sugar and mint
Add the Myers's and then fill the glass with crushed ice
Garnish with a strawberry and a sprig of mint
Mango Mojito
Squeeze the lime wedges into a small glass; add wedges and
mint to glass. Crush with the back of a spoon for 30 seconds.
Add
soda, rum, Simple Syrup, and nectar; stir gently. Serve over
ice.
