Well,
this is indeed one perennial of the tender variety, at least
where my garden's concerned, not so much because of the cold
(like it ever really gets COLD in Los Angeles) but more because
of the damp conditions that occur because I live so close
to the beach. I originally put these in a spot where they
survive but don't exactly thrive. I think there's a little
too much shade there for these sun-lovers, and the jury is
still out on whether that one's gonna make it or not. But
last year, I added more plants to a second location where
they are growing like gangbusters. Powdery mildew can sometimes
be a problem with the leaves, but with the Soap-Shield, that
is usually kept under control. thse make terific cut flowers
and brighten up every garden. The purple looks particularly
vibrant on an overcast day or in low light. I've got them
behind my hibiscus and the purple and orange combo looks
very pretty. So far, their flowering cycle has lasted for
quite a while--several months already. Always a treat to
have something that stays colorful for so long.

The
delicate blue of these flowers was an instant draw. And
so far, so good on the location, which gets plenty of
sun, although these are still sitting in the containers from
the garden store, waiting to get put into the ground.
So we'll have to wait and see what kind of permanence these
plants achieve once they take root, and see what kind
of flowering they do when they show up again next year.
