I use the Crowley (Book of Thoth) deck (yes, the Magick guy) when I read. It was the first deck I ever used and I have kept using it ever since because I took right to this particular deck and think the pictures are just beautiful. This is not really recommended for those just starting out though, since this is kind of what some people refer to as as a dense deck, and from what I've been told, can be difficult for beginners to get a handle on, although there are books about explaining the symbology of the deck to help in this effort. The particular deck that I have was bought for me by a friend. It was used, and we both (separately) felt the powerful energy of the deck when we were looking through all the different decks at the store. I store it in a little collaged box that she made for me as part of my present, wrapping the cards in a hankerchief that my grandfather gave me when I was a little girl to use for doing magic tricks. Because the psychic line in my family is from him to my mother to me, it only seemed appropriate to use it to wrap the cards, since one day, soon after I got the deck, I found this scarf while cleaning out my room at my parent's house. I do not follow any particular reading method, although I do use the Celtic Cross layout. The only instructions I ever had on how to read cards were just my friend telling me, "You're psychic. Just say whatever comes into your head." That's all I've been doing ever since, and based on people's reactions when I read their cards, it seems to work. So while books seem to help many people, I can't speak to that from personal experience. It seems for me that the cards fluctuate in meaning anyway, so I'm not really sure how good any book is that is too literal in terms of what things mean. Although knowing a little about the astrological signs and the ideas behind the cards definitely can't hurt! Certain cards seem to come up in a person's reading again and again, indicating that the person is somehow connected to the spirit embodied by that card. I mean this. I've seen it with myself and with friends who I read for a lot, always the same damn cards come up!!!! My personal tarot card connections are described here.
