Use Incense Indoors or Outdoors But Always in a Flameproof Dish or Spinkled over a charcoal or open fire (but make sure room is well ventilated if doing this indoors) Combo Ideas ROMANTIC Lavender flowers or rose petals REFRESHING lemon balm, lemongrass, lemon mint, peppermint, rosemary, sage or thyme, dill or fennel seeds EXOTIC Bay leaves, coriander or cumin seeds NOTE: Gum Benzoin is used as a fixative (scent-holder) in these recipes, so if you substitute ingredients, be sure not to omit that one!) Incense Powder 1 oz. sandalwood powder, 1/2 oz. each coriander and cardamom seeds (lightly crushed, 1 tsp myrrh crystals, 1 oz dried lavender flowers, ground to a powder, 1 oz. gum benzoin powder, 2-3 drops essential oil. Makes about 4 oz. Mix sandalwood, coriander, cardamom, myrrh & lavender. Incense Cones 5 tbsp gum arabic crystals, 6 oz, crushed charcoal, 1 oz. gum benzoin powder, 1 tsp sandalwood powder, 1 tsp gr, coriander powder, 1 oz dried bay leaves, finely crumbled, 1 oz dried lavender flowers, ground to a powder, 4-5 drops essential oil (sandalwood or lavender). Makes about 20 cones. Put the gum arabic into a small bowl & mix to a stiff paste (adding just neough water to make a paste) Mix charcoal, gum benzoin powder, sandalwood & gr. coriander and stir in gum arabic paste. Stir in bay leaves & lavender & add oil. Stir until thoroughly blended. Form cones about 2 in. high & leave in a warm place for about 2 days. When dry, wrap in foil to preserve aroma. Unwrap and light tip to burn.
