The Existential Surfers

A Film by Mario Coello

Who are we, but who we think we are...

In Existential Surfers, I play the girfriend of Johnny Slater/ Jean Paul Sartre, a guy who is wrestling within his mind over who he really is and what constitutes reality as he knows it.  Torn between the worlds of modern day surfers on the sunny beaches of California and the perilous and intellectual times of the French cafe society during Nazi occupation, Sartre struggles to make sense of events that seemingly appear incongruous.   Is he the leader of his band of surfers, is he Sartre, the sophisticated leader of modern philosophy, or is he, in fact, both?  And, in the end, does any of this matter?

These clips are from a rough cut of the film, made available to me to use on this site and on my reel. When he is finished editing the film, the director, Mario Coello, intends to submit it to various festivals and ultimately, expand it into a feature.  If you would like to give Mario feedback on what you see, feel free to email him with your thoughts, praise, or constructive criticisms about this film.....
